Estonia Road Trip: 7 Days Around Estonia, Free PDF Itinerary

Cover of the free PDF: 7 Days Around Estonia, a self-drive road trip itinerary by Museumist

An Estonia road trip is easier than you think: the country is small enough to drive around in a week and wild enough to feel like you crossed a continent doing it. This is the loop I send friends on when they visit: seven days, about 900 kilometres, never more than three hours of driving in a day, starting and ending in Tallinn. I put it in a 12-page PDF with day-by-day pages, my local secrets and links back to the blog, and I give it away to everyone on my mailing list.

What is in the 7-day Estonia road trip

  • Day 1, Tallinn. Old Town on foot, Telliskivi and Balti Jaam market for lunch, the Seaplane Harbour in the evening. You collect the car the next morning.
  • Day 2, Lahemaa National Park. Jägala waterfall, the Viru bog boardwalk, the captains’ village of Käsmu and a night by a baroque manor.
  • Day 3, Tartu. Rakvere castle on the way, then the university city: Town Hall Square, Toomemägi, the Estonian National Museum and the Aparaaditehas quarter at night.
  • Day 4, Soomaa and Viljandi. Bog trails or a canoe through flooded forest, then the lakeside town at the heart of Estonian folk music.
  • Day 5, Pärnu. The summer capital: beach, wooden villas, a proper sauna afternoon and a sunset walk out along the breakwater.
  • Day 6, Saaremaa. Ferry via Muhu, the Kaali meteorite crater, Kuressaare castle and an island farm dinner.
  • Day 7, the coast home. Panga cliff at sunrise, lunch in Haapsalu, and the coastal drive back to Tallinn.

Kuressaare castle, day 6. The best-preserved medieval bishop’s castle in the Baltics.

Every day page has a morning, midday and evening plan, the driving distance, where to sleep and one “local secret” I would not put on a public page. There is also a one-page practical section: when to go, renting a car at Tallinn Airport, island ferries, driving rules and why you never need cash. The whole route opens in Google Maps with one tap.

Who this is for

Anyone with a week and a driving licence. The roads are calm and well signed, the distances are short, and the loop works in either direction. It is written for a first visit, so if you have already done Tallinn and want the rest of the country, this is the rest of the country. Best months are May to September, when the ferries run often and the light lasts past ten at night.

How to get the PDF

Tap the button, enter your email, confirm it in the message that follows, and the PDF arrives in the next one. Save it to your phone: the day pages work offline, and the blog links wait for wifi. The itinerary is free and I do not sell your address to anyone. What you get afterwards is my newsletter, a few times a month, with honest museum and travel tips from Estonia and wherever I happen to be.

Read before your Estonia road trip

The route links to the guides I would read first: the Seaplane Harbour in Tallinn, Tartu museums with a day-trip route, Estonia summer events 2026 for timing the loop around a festival, the Estonian museum card if you plan to stop at more than three museums, and museums open on Monday for the day when most doors are shut.
