If you’re looking for a great family activity in Tartu, the Tartu Toy Museum is a must-visit. Our family spent the whole day there and nobody wanted to leave. The museum is located in the heart of Tartu’s Old Town on Lutsu Street and offers experiences for both young and old.

First Impression — Like Stepping Into a Fairy Tale
The moment we stepped through the museum door, a special atmosphere took hold. The Tartu Toy Museum is housed in several beautiful historic wooden houses on Lutsu Street — buildings at Lutsu 2, 4, and 8 are connected by galleries, so you can walk through the entire complex comfortably. The girls were immediately excited because every room opened up a new fascinating world.
Permanent Exhibition Treasures — Toys Through the Ages
The museum’s permanent exhibition displays thousands of toys that children in Estonia and around the world have played with through the ages. Our daughter spent a long time gazing at beautiful art dolls and souvenir dolls from different nations — each doll told its own story. Our younger daughter was especially interested in old board games and dollhouses furnished with incredible detail.
The exhibition also features traditional Finno-Ugric toys, offering a fascinating overview of our cultural heritage. Plus, the outdoor house displays unique puppets from Estonian animated films — the very characters children recognise from the screen!

Hands-On Activities — Touching Is Allowed Here!
This is where children truly shine. Unlike many museums, the Tartu Toy Museum has interactive activities in every room. Our girls got to operate a model railway, which instantly became their favourite — they stood by it for ages, examining every detail. They also got to try a mechanical puppet theatre and put on their own little puppet shows on mini stages.
In all exhibition rooms, you can play with copies of old toys and board games, watch Estonian animated films, and explore media programmes about toy history. In 2026, there’s also a new hands-on exhibition called “ME, SUPERHERO!” which our girls found incredibly exciting — who wouldn’t want to test themselves as a superhero?
The Playroom — Kids’ Favourite Spot
The playroom on the second floor of the Lutsu 8 building is the place children always want to return to. Here they can play with educational toys and board games, browse children’s books, try on different costumes, and furnish dollhouses. Our 10-year-old found the costume corner where she tried on the entire wardrobe, while her older sister was absorbed in a complex board game.
The playroom is open Wednesday to Sunday from 11 AM to 4 PM, and there’s also an educator on hand to help children with activities. It’s the ideal place where parents can sit peacefully while kids have fun.

Theatre Home — A Museum Theatre Unique in the World
Special mention goes to the Theatre Home, located in a beautifully renovated 18th-century wooden house at Lutsu 2. This is a museum-inspired theatre unique in the entire world, where productions draw inspiration from childhood, games, and imagination. During our visit, we enjoyed a children’s show that captivated both daughters from start to finish.
The 2026 programme has plenty of exciting shows. We definitely recommend checking performance times on the museum’s website in advance.

Our Recommendation — Definitely Go!
The Tartu Toy Museum is much more than just a museum — it’s an experience for the whole family. Our daughters, who are at the age where “museums are boring,” were genuinely thrilled. Interactive exhibitions, the playroom, puppet theatre, and Theatre Home shows provide activities for at least a full day.
We especially recommend it for families with school-age children — both 10 and 12-year-olds found plenty to enjoy. And honestly — we adults also left with a warm feeling in our hearts, remembering our own childhood favourite toys.
