Lapland at Christmas 2026: Rovaniemi, Santa Claus Village, Prices and How to Get There

Lapland at Christmas 2026 starts in Rovaniemi with a sunrise at 10:59 and a sunset at 13:34 on 24 December. Two and a half hours of low light, then a long blue dusk, and dark by half past three. The December average is minus 9 °C, the coldest nights minus 30. Honestly, that is what you are flying 800 km north of Helsinki for: a darkness that works better than any light installation.

This guide covers what is actually open in Rovaniemi from 24 to 26 December, what is free at Santa’s and what costs 57 euros, what the night train and the glass igloos cost, and how to get there. One honest caveat: the 2026 holiday hours quoted here are published by the venues. Santa’s departure on 23 December and the holiday bus timetable are not yet confirmed.

1. Santa Claus Village and its two free Santas

Santa Claus Office 30 November 2026 to 3 January 2027, daily 08:00 to 20:00, including 24, 25 and 31 December. Free admission. Confirmed.

The village sits 8 km north of the centre on highway 4, on the Arctic Circle, with no entrance fee. Santa receives visitors in the clock-tower building on the main square, and meeting him is free. The money is in the photos: the download pack with video is 57 € for up to five people, an A4 print 42 €. Your own phone is not allowed inside and there is no obligation to buy. In peak week the queue through the dim elf corridor runs 1 to 3 hours. Crossing the painted Arctic Circle line is free.

Lapland Christmas 2026: reindeer at Santa Claus Village in Rovaniemi
A reindeer by the kota huts at Santa Claus Village. Looking is free, the ride is not.

The second Santa, the one guidebooks skip, sits in Christmas House at Tähtikuja 2. Also free, with shorter waits, and open 08:00 to 22:00 on 24 and 25 December. My honest take: 08:00 on Christmas Eve is the shortest queue of the year in both houses, because the Finns are at home and the coach groups left the night before.

2. Santa Claus’ Main Post Office

1 December 2026 to 6 January 2027, daily 09:00 to 20:00, holidays included. Free. Confirmed.

Tähtikuja 1, an official Posti office. You buy a stamp and a card and it gets the Arctic Circle postmark. Two letterboxes: yellow sends your card now, red holds it until next Christmas. A few euros. It is the only thing in the village that is genuinely cheap, and a card in the red box is a better souvenir than a 42-euro photo.

3. SantaPark, the cavern inside the hill

24 to 31 December 2026 daily 09:00 to 18:00. Adults from 42 €, children aged 3 to 12 from 37 €, under 3 free, plus a booking fee. Confirmed, prices vary by date.

Tarvantie 1, dug into Syväsenvaara hill, 2 km from the village by footpath. The ticket includes Elf School, a private meeting with Santa, the Elf Show, gingerbread decorating, the Magic Train and an ice gallery. Photos cost extra. About plus 4 °C underground, so the jacket stays on. Right for children aged 3 to 10; couples have little reason to go. And if you paid 57 € for photos at the Office and pay again for a second Santa here, you have bought the same thing twice. Pick one.

4. Snowman World, the snow and ice park

6 December 2026 to 6 January 2027 daily 10:00 to 20:00, weather permitting. From 35 € per person, under 2 free. Confirmed.

Joulumaantie 5, inside the village. Ice and snow slides, a skating rink with skates, kick sledges, ice sculptures, an ice disco and a warm café. The Snow Restaurant serves on ice tables under reindeer hides: dinner from 124 € including park entry, at 18:00 and on 24 and 25 December also at 20:00. Roast elk or Arctic salmon. 35 € is fair for two hours if there is real snow. In a mild December it is an ice slide and a café.

5. Reindeer and husky rides next to the village

Reindeer 30 November 2026 to 10 January 2027 daily 10:00 to 17:00, huskies 10:00 to 16:00. Reindeer path from 30 €, husky ride 63 € adults, 52 € children aged 4 to 11. Confirmed.

Reindeer sleigh ride through a snowy Lapland forest
A reindeer ride is slow and silent. A husky ride is fast and loud. They are two different things, not the same thing at two prices.

Santa Claus Reindeer sells a 400 m path lasting 6 minutes from 30 € and an 800 m forest path lasting 10 minutes from 50 €, no pre-booking. Bearhill Husky runs a 2.5 km ride, 7 to 12 minutes, walk-ins not guaranteed. Snowmobiles: two hours from 119 €, the driver needs a driving licence and the police do check. A reindeer moves in silence apart from the bell; huskies howl at the start, then go quiet. 50 € for ten minutes is a lot; for a child the 400 m path at 30 € is the same experience.

6. Arktikum, and a warning about Pilke

December daily 10:00 to 18:00, closed on 24 December, open on 25 and 26 December. Adults 22 €, children aged 7 to 17 10 €, under 7 free, family 54 €. Confirmed.

Pohjanranta 4, on the riverbank, a quarter of an hour on foot from the centre. A glass tunnel pointing at the river, an aurora theatre where you lie on the floor, exhibitions on the Sámi and the Lapland War. The only museum in Rovaniemi open on Christmas Day, and on an afternoon that is dark from three you will want it. The warning: Science Centre Pilke, in the same block, closed permanently on 2 October 2026. Older guides still list it. The doors are shut.

Lapland at Christmas 2026: if six is not enough

  • Santa’s departure on 23 December. Every year on the village square at about 19:30, free. Not yet confirmed for 2026. The most crowded hour of the year on the square: arrive by 18:30 or watch Visit Rovaniemi’s live stream.
  • Ounasvaara ski hill. 2 km from the centre, 10 slopes, day pass 49 €, children 36.50 €. Free sledging slopes and lit cross-country tracks.
  • Icebreaker Sampo in Kemi. 115 km south, from 392 € for the 6-hour package with ice floating in a survival suit. Kemi’s SnowCastle is not a Christmas option: the old castle is no longer built and the Winter Park opens in mid-January.
  • Levi and Saariselkä. Levi is 170 km north, 43 slopes, day pass 58 €, real polar night. Saariselkä is 260 km north, with Kakslauttanen’s glass igloos from 501 € a night. For couples who want the aurora without the Santa circus.

Kaamos: why Rovaniemi has no real polar night

The Finnish word for the dark season is kaamos, and Rovaniemi only half qualifies. The city lies at 66.50° north and the Arctic Circle at 66.56°, so technically the sun rises every day. On Christmas Eve it is up for two hours and 35 minutes; under cloud that is one long blue dusk. The true polar night begins further north in Saariselkä, Inari and Utsjoki. December offers 18 to 20 hours of darkness for the northern lights but is also the cloudiest month: three nights give a reasonable chance, five a better one. And one thing a visitor rarely knows: Santa leaves on 23 December because the main Finnish celebration is Christmas Eve. On 24 December the Finns are at home, the village is quiet and several activities close at 15:00. Best day for Santa without a queue; for plenty to do, come 26 to 30 December.

Practical

  • Weather: December averages −9 °C, the coldest nights −30. A mild December can bring sleet. Wool layers and a reflector for the dark.
  • Daylight: on 24 December the sun is up from 10:59 to 13:34, usable twilight from about 09:00 to 15:30.
  • Bus 8: from the railway station to the Arctic Circle in 30 minutes, 3.60 € cash, 3.30 € in the Waltti app, children 1.80 €, 24-hour ticket 9 €. On the holidays the Sunday timetable most likely applies, 6 departures, last return at 18:05. The Airport Express is 8 €.
  • Clothing rental: a full set (jacket, trousers, mittens, boots) from 39 € a day at Winterent, 25 € at Wild Nordic. Safaris include a thermal overall; the village does not.
  • Food on the holidays: book a table well in advance. Jauri Resort’s Christmas buffet on 24 and 25 December from 18:00 to 21:00 is 58 €, Gaissa at Hotel Santa Claus serves from 16:00 to 23:00. Alko is closed from 24 to 26 December, supermarkets close early on Christmas Eve.
  • Prices: a city-centre hotel at 120 to 150 € a night in summer runs about 280 to 320 € in Christmas week; glass igloos 900 to 2000 € a night. A self-organised three-day trip costs a family of four roughly 3800 to 4300 € without an igloo, a couple from Helsinki by train 2400 to 2600 €.
  • Booking: igloos and family rooms sell out 6 to 12 months ahead. Night-train cabins north on 20 to 23 December and south on 26 to 29 December sell out weeks ahead. SantaPark and the Snow Restaurant need pre-booking over the holidays. The Santa Claus Office takes no bookings, only the queue.

How to get to Rovaniemi

  • Fly: Finnair flies five times a day from Helsinki, 1 hour 15 minutes, also on Christmas Eve; early-December returns from 143 €, Christmas week more. From Tallinn there is no direct flight; Finnair connects via Helsinki on one ticket, from 229 € return in November.
  • Night train: the VR Santa Claus Express leaves Helsinki at 19:29 and arrives at 07:20; a later train leaves at 23:13 and arrives at 11:03. Cabins from 49 €, with shower from 74 € at the lowest fare; in December expect 100 to 200 € per cabin each way. The return at 17:52 reaches Helsinki at 06:27. Cars load at Pasila from 39 €. Cabins sell out before hotel rooms do.
  • Drive: Helsinki to Rovaniemi is 830 km on highway 4, 10 to 11 hours in winter, mostly in the dark. Winter tyres are compulsory and reindeer on the road at dusk are a real hazard. A rental car makes sense for Ranua, Kemi or Levi; for the village alone, bus 8 is enough.
  • From Tallinn by ferry: 2 hours to Helsinki, tram 7 or 9 to the railway station, then the 19:29 night train.

Flights from Helsinki to Rovaniemi, Kittilä or Ivalo take about an hour and a quarter. Compare fares against the night-train cabin on Kiwi.com.

Lapland at Christmas 2026: what I would pick

Three nights from 23 to 26 December in a city-centre hotel and a 24-hour bus 8 ticket, not a glass igloo. 23 December: the village square by 18:30 for Santa’s departure. 24 December: the Santa Claus Office at 08:00 while the queue is the shortest of the year, a card into the red box, the Snow Restaurant at 20:00. 25 December: Arktikum at 10:00, Ounasvaara sledging in the afternoon. 26 December: a husky ride and the 17:52 train south. The igloo money would go on one northern lights hunt at 99 €.

Frequently asked questions

Is meeting Santa in Rovaniemi free?

Yes. The Santa Claus Office and Christmas House charge nothing for the meeting. You pay only for photos: 57 € for the download pack for up to five people, 42 € for an A4 print. SantaPark’s 42 € ticket includes a private meeting.

Is Santa Claus Village open on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day?

Yes. The Santa Claus Office is open 08:00 to 20:00 on both days, the Post Office 09:00 to 20:00 and SantaPark 09:00 to 18:00. A few small attractions close at 15:00 on 24 December, and Arktikum is closed that day only.

Is it dark all day in Rovaniemi in December?

No. On 24 December the sun is above the horizon from about 11:00 to 13:30, with long twilight either side. The true polar night starts further north, in Levi and Saariselkä. It is dark by 15:30.

Will we see the northern lights at Christmas?

Possible, not guaranteed. December has the most darkness and also the most cloud. Local operators recommend 3 to 5 nights and a tour that drives to clear sky, from about 99 € per adult.
