Helsinki Christmas Market 2026 closes on 22 December, two days before Christmas, and that tells you more about Finns than any guidebook. The market is called Tuomaan markkinat, St Thomas’s Market, and St Thomas’s Day is the day by which Christmas preparations must be finished in the Finnish tradition. After that, everyone goes home, to the sauna and to silence. If you come to Helsinki on Christmas Eve looking for the market, you will find an empty Senate Square and a tree.
Here is everything you need to know about the 2026 market, honestly marked as confirmed or last year’s information. And at the end, what to do if you arrive after 22 December.
Helsinki Christmas Market 2026: dates and opening hours
- Open: 27 November to 22 December 2026, Senate Square (Senaatintori). Confirmed on the organiser’s website.
- Hours (2025): Sunday to Thursday 11:00 to 19:00, Friday and Saturday 11:00 to 20:00. 2026 hours are not yet published, but they have not changed in years.
- Opening: in 2025 the mayor lit the tree at 18:00 on opening day. Expect the same on Friday 27 November 2026.
- Entry: free. The carousel is free too.
- Organiser: the City of Helsinki’s events foundation. The market has run since 1994, originally in Esplanadi park.
- Visitors: a record 650,000-plus in 2025. Five years ago it was 350,000. Keep that in mind when you pick a weekend.
What is there: a hundred craftspeople, thirty kitchens and one carousel
Red wooden huts below the cathedral steps: about a hundred artisans and small producers and nearly thirty food and drink stalls, 115 vendors in all. Every year about a fifth are new, and some huts change vendor weekly, so the market is slightly different on the second weekend than on the first. The food courtyards are in heated tents, which were enlarged by half in 2025 because people did not fit.
At the Aleksanterinkatu edge of the square stands an old carousel with hand-painted horses. It is free, for the whole of the market’s opening hours, and it is the only place in Helsinki where a child does not ask how much it costs.
Santa is present several days a week, on opening day from 15:00 to 19:00, and his schedule goes on the market’s website. The stage has jazz evenings curated by We Jazz, a cappella, brass bands and a children’s circus. Craftspeople blow glass and roast chestnuts. On 6 December, Finland’s Independence Day, the students’ torchlight procession ends on Senate Square, and on 13 December the Lucia procession sets off from here. If you can line your trip up with either, do.
What it costs: glögi, rice porridge and flame-grilled salmon
Finns are conservative about Christmas food, and the market is proud of it. Rice porridge, joulutorttu (a puff-pastry star with prune jam), glögi in ten variations, spruce-shoot and chaga lattes, loimulohi, salmon grilled beside an open fire, and reindeer. The 2025 novelties were Korean corn dogs and bubble waffles, and I do not know what to make of that.
Prices, the latest hard numbers from a Yle survey: rice porridge €5 to 12 depending on how much is piled on top, alcohol-free glögi from €3.50 and typically €5 to 7, alcoholic glögi €6 to 10, the most expensive €13.50. Joulutorttu €2.50 to 4.50. Compared with Tallinn Christmas Market, Helsinki’s glögi is cheaper and the food is about the same.
A sauna at the market
In some years the market has had a wood-fired public Christmas sauna, €5 with a towel, one hour, no booking, no showers. It was not in the organiser’s announcements in 2024 or 2025. If it comes back in 2026, it is the best thing at the whole market, and I will update this.
Tours and experiences in Helsinki
The Christmas lights on Aleksanterinkatu
A week before the market opens, on the last or second-to-last Saturday of November, Helsinki holds its Christmas opening. A parade sets off beside Senate Square at 16:00, goes along Aleksanterinkatu, Mannerheimintie and the Esplanadi and comes back, and the Aleksanterinkatu lights come on section by section as the parade passes. The mayor and Santa from Korvatunturi lead it. In 2025 it was 22 November; the 2026 date is not yet published, most likely 21 or 28 November. Esplanadi park has a hundred thousand lights and reindeer with a sleigh.
If you arrive after 22 December
Then there are two options. Mantan joulutori by the Havis Amanda fountain next to the Market Square opened for the first time in 2025 and ran from 5 December to 6 January, daily 11:00 to 19:00, free, with 12 food stalls and 500 seats. It is the only Christmas market in Helsinki open over Christmas and New Year. Not yet confirmed for 2026.
The other option is Suomenlinna. The fortress is dressed for Christmas from December to early January, the artisans’ studios are open, there are concerts in the lighthouse church, and the ferry from the Market Square takes 15 minutes. Not a market, but better than a market.
Other Christmas markets in Helsinki (2025 dates)
- Vanhan Joulutori, the Old Student House at Mannerheimintie 3: 15 to 22 December, two floors of crafts, indoors, free. If it is sleeting outside, come here.
- Teurastamo Christmas market in Kalasatama: 20 and 21 December, 11:00 to 18:00. Same place as Halloween.
- Kaapelitehdas: designers’ and artists’ Christmas sales throughout December; Ornamo Design Joulu is the strongest Finnish design gift market. 2026 dates will appear on kaapelitehdas.fi.
- Seurasaari Christmas Path: Sunday 14 December, 12:00 to 17:00, free, an old-time Christmas on the island. For families.
Practical
- Crowds: evenings and weekends are very full. Weekdays before 15:00 are calm.
- Weather: +1 °C by day, −2 °C at night, damp and windy, snow not promised. December 2025 was mostly snow-free. The sun sets around 15:20, and 15:10 by late December.
- From the ferry: from Katajanokka terminal (Viking) it is a 10-minute walk or tram 5. From the West Terminal (Tallink, Eckerö) take tram 7 or 9 to Aleksanterinkatu, or 5T direct at weekends. Trams 2, 4, 5 and 7 stop at Senate Square. One HSL ticket covers everything.
- Warming up: Café Engel at Aleksanterinkatu 26, directly opposite the cathedral, salmon soup and cakes. Savotta at Aleksanterinkatu 22, logging-camp-style Finnish food, open every day of the year. Upstairs in the Engel building, Sunn has a view over the square.
- Christmas Peace: it is declared at noon on 24 December in Turku, not Helsinki, but the whole of Finland watches it on television. If you are in Helsinki on Christmas Eve, watch it too.
Ferry and hotel prices climb for the December weekends, so book them early.
Helsinki Christmas Market 2026: what I would do
Take the ferry on Friday 27 November, be on the square at 18:00 when the tree comes on, eat one overloaded rice porridge and take one turn on the carousel, because it is free and nobody is watching. Or come on 6 December for the torches. And if you want two markets in one weekend, Tallinn Christmas Market is two hours away by ferry and open until 6 January, exactly when Helsinki’s has already closed.
