New Year in Finland 2026 is first of all a decision about how much darkness you want. In Rovaniemi the sun rises at 11:00 on 31 December and sets at 13:40. In Saariselkä it does not rise at all until 8 January. Lapland that week is usually 15 to 25 below zero. And here is what guidebooks skip: most Finnish cities have cancelled their fireworks. A Finnish New Year is an evening at home or in a cottage: small sausages, a sauna, a few rockets and the president’s speech at noon the next day.
Seven options below: Rovaniemi, Santa Claus Village, Levi, Saariselkä, Tampere, Turku and a rented cottage. One honest caveat first: almost nothing for 31 December 2026 is officially announced yet. Finnish cities and resorts publish their programmes in the second half of December. Confirmed so far: the Hullu Poro Areena concert in Levi, the Rajaportti sauna in Tampere, a few museum hours and live cottage prices. Everything else is the 2025 pattern and is labelled as such.
1. Rovaniemi: midnight fireworks on the riverbank
31 December at 00:00, the Kemijoki riverbank in the centre. Free. 2025 pattern; the 2026 programme comes in late December.
Rovaniemi is one of the few Finnish cities still shooting fireworks, and the local paper Lapin Kansa gives the reason plainly: customers asked for them. The rockets go up from the Koskipuisto swimming beach, and the city names the shore in front of the Pohjanhovi hotel as the best place to stand. In 2025 a family reception ran first in front of Lappia-talo from 17:00 to 18:30 with music, a fire show and the mayor’s greeting. Parking is scarce, so walk. At midnight it is around minus 10 on the river, the loudest night of the winter in a town that is otherwise silent.
Info: rovaniemi.fi.
2. Santa Claus Village on the Arctic Circle: no official New Year’s Eve
Tähtikuja 1, 8 km north of the centre, bus 8 from the station for about 4 €. Entrance free.
Santa Claus Village lists no official New Year’s Eve event and no fireworks on its own events page. Everything sold online as “New Year’s Eve at Santa Claus Village” is a safari company package that ends with fireworks at the village at midnight. Safartica takes you to the Arctic SnowHotel (25 km away) for a snow disco, ice bar and fire show, from 124 € with transfers and thermal clothing (2025/26 level). The village itself is open every day, including 1 January. My view: the Arctic Circle line is just as free in daylight, and midnight is better on the river in town, 8 km and one taxi ride away.

Info: santaclausvillage.info, Safartica.
3. Levi: fireworks over the slope, night skiing until 23:30 and Hullu Poro Areena
Hullu Poro Areena, 31 December 2026: Tungevaag & Louna, doors 21:00, show 23:00, from 36.50 €, 18+. Confirmed. Fireworks and night skiing: 2025 pattern.
Levi is where Finland goes to party. In 2025 the fireworks went up at midnight from the front slopes, the best spots were Zero Point and the Hullu Poro terrace, and the Glacier Express chairlift ran until 23:30. So you can ski half an hour before midnight and watch the rockets over the run you just came down. Areena tickets are on Tiketti. Two warnings: no ski bus runs at night, and it can be 20 to 30 below. Private fireworks are banned in Levi centre and on the slopes from 18:00 to 02:00. The first sunrise of 2027 is on 1 January and lasts 26 minutes.
Info: hulluporo.fi, levi.fi.
4. Saariselkä: New Year without a sunrise
Ski Saariselkä open daily 10:00 to 18:00 from 21 December 2026 to 3 January 2027. Confirmed. New Year programme: not announced.
In Saariselkä the sun does not rise between 4 December and 8 January. On 31 December there is only a blue twilight from about 09:34 to 14:52, then dark. A shock for families who expected daylight skiing, the reason to come for aurora hunters: the Finnish Meteorological Institute puts the northern lights at roughly every second clear night in central Lapland, best around 23:30, exactly when you are already outside. The last documented programme (2019/20) had fireworks and a torchlight descent at 19:30; 2026 will be clear in December. With no official midnight show, people walk up Kaunispää or onto a hotel terrace. Ivalo airport is 30 minutes away by bus. For a couple, not a group.

Info: skisaariselka.com, aurora forecast at ilmatieteenlaitos.fi.
5. Tampere: fireworks at 22:00, not midnight
31 December at 22:00, Ratina bay, free. The kohokohdat.fi calendar already lists 31 December 2026; the organiser’s own site has no 2026 date yet.
The city dropped its own fireworks years ago; since 2012 local businesses have paid for a 22:00 show instead. The rockets go up from Ratina bay and you watch from the Laukontori quay, the Tammerkoski rapids roaring behind you and the display reflected in water that rarely freezes. The 22:00 slot suits families; afterwards the bars take over. Ratina-side rooms at the Sokos Hotel Ilves see it from the window. Two sauna facts guidebooks get wrong: Rauhaniemi, the famous ice-swimming sauna, is closed for renovation from 22 March 2026 until spring 2027. Rajaportti (Pispalan valtatie 9, Finland’s oldest working public sauna, 1906) runs a mixed New Year sauna on 31 December 2026 from 16:00 to 23:00 for 8 €, confirmed. Train from Helsinki 1.5 to 2 hours.
Info: tampereenilotulitus.fi, rajaportinsauna.fi.
6. Turku: rockets from Samppalinna hill at midnight, children’s show at 18:00
31 December at 00:00 from Samppalinnanmäki, children’s fireworks at 18:00 at Kupittaa. Free. 2025 pattern; the city decided on 20 November 2025 to keep its fireworks, the 2026 programme is not out yet.
Turku is the safest city choice this winter: in November 2025 the city formally voted to keep its fireworks despite an initiative to stop them. The rockets launch from Samppalinna hill on the east bank of the Aura river, you watch from the west bank (Läntinen Rantakatu, Teatterisilta, Martinsilta), and the quay is packed within 20 metres of the water. Children get a quieter display at 18:00 in Kupittaa park. By day, Turku Castle is open on 31 December 2026 from 10:00 to 15:00 (18 €, children 8 €, family 44 €); 1 January is not listed. Train from Helsinki about 2 hours.
Info: visitturku.fi, turunlinna.fi.
7. A cottage: sausages, sauna and tin casting (Ylläs if you want Lapland cheaply)
Lomarengas, 28 December 2026 to 4 January 2027, as of 6 October: Ylläs 31 left from 906 €, Saariselkä 7 left from 822 €, Levi 7 left from 1,737 €.
The real Finnish New Year happens at a mökki, a rented cottage: sauna in the afternoon, a dip through the lake ice if there is a hole, sausages and potato salad, a few rockets at midnight, the president’s speech on TV next day. Three nights from 30 December to 2 January start at 214 € around Rovaniemi and 233 € in the Tampere region, cleaning and cancellation insurance included. Ylläs is the sensible Lapland choice: a traditional torchlight descent on the Ylläsjärvi front slope on 31 December (gather 16:00 at the Y1 building, descent 16:30; not yet confirmed for 2026), 56 minutes of sun, and cottages at half the Levi price. And the fact that ruins the evening if you miss it: Alko, the state alcohol shop, closes at 18:00 on 31 December and is shut on 1 January. Buy on 30 December.

Info: Lomarengas Ylläs, ski.yllas.fi.
Tours and experiences in Rovaniemi
If you would rather book New Year’s Eve as a package, the Rovaniemi programmes and aurora trips can be compared here.
New Year in Finland 2026: if seven is not enough
- Helsinki. The capital has its own article with times, the city show and night transport: New Year’s Eve in Helsinki 2026.
- Mariehamn, Åland. The town has contracted a professional 10-minute midnight display for 2025 to 2027, so 31 December 2026 is covered; watch from the library terrace at Strandgatan 29. A Swedish-speaking small-town New Year for couples. Five hours by ferry from Turku, one hour by air from Helsinki.
- Porvoo. Cancelled its own New Year celebration in 2025 to save money, nothing planned for 2026. A daytime stop, not a destination.
Finnish New Year traditions: tin, sausages and the president’s speech
The best-known custom is tin casting, uudenvuodentina: a small horseshoe-shaped piece of metal is melted in a ladle and poured into cold water, and the shape and its shadow are read as a fortune. Lead tins have been banned since 2018; the shop version is now 97 percent tin, some people pour wax instead. Dinner is nakit, small sausages with potato salad, and sparkling wine at midnight. At 12:00 on 1 January the president speaks on Yle TV1, a tradition since 1935 on radio and 1958 on television; Alexander Stubb’s 2026 speech ran 14 minutes. The greeting is “Hyvää uutta vuotta”.
Practical
| Place | Sun on 31 December 2026 | Civil twilight (usable light) |
|---|---|---|
| Turku | 09:38–15:30 | 08:40–16:28 |
| Tampere | 09:43–15:13 | 08:40–16:15 |
| Rovaniemi | 11:00–13:40 | 09:16–15:24 |
| Ylläs | 11:58–12:55 | 09:36–15:17 |
| Levi | no sunrise, first on 1 Jan 12:11–12:37 | 09:36–15:12 |
| Saariselkä | no sunrise until 8 Jan | 09:34–14:52 |
- Weather: December averages: Rovaniemi minus 7.7 °C, Sodankylä (nearest station to Levi and Saariselkä) minus 9.6 °C with 33 cm of snow; Tampere minus 5.6 °C in January. Turku is often around zero and snowless.
- Open and closed: Alko until 18:00 on 31 December, closed on 1 January. On 1 January big supermarkets open around midday, small shops and most museums stay shut, ski resorts open 10:00 to 18:00. Restaurants serve set menus on 31 December at 80 to 150 € per person; book ahead.
- Trains: VR runs a Friday timetable on 31 December and a Sunday timetable on 1 January. The night train leaves Helsinki around 19:29 and reaches Rovaniemi around 07:20; for Levi and Ylläs the station is Kolari, then a bus. A two-berth cabin is 49 to 69 € in low season; at New Year expect two to three times that.
- Fireworks law: consumer fireworks are allowed only from 18:00 on 31 December to 02:00 on 1 January, for people aged 18 or over, sober, with safety glasses (mandatory for the person firing). Ban zones: all of Tampere centre, Levi centre and slopes, Helsinki centre.
- What sells out: night-train cabins, Levi and Saariselkä cottages, glass igloos and Santa Claus Village hotels (9 to 12 months ahead, non-refundable deposits).
- Combining with Tallinn? The Helsinki to Tallinn ferry takes 2 to 2.5 hours and runs on 31 December and 1 January too; my day-trip guide covers it.
Flights from Helsinki to Rovaniemi take about 1 hour 20 with Finnair and Norwegian, from about 65 € one way in December and more at New Year. Finnair also flies to Kittilä (Levi, Ylläs) and Ivalo (Saariselkä). Compare fares on Kiwi.com. Night-train tickets are at vr.fi and direct flights at finnair.com; buy both now.
If New Year is part of a longer winter trip, read these first: Lapland Christmas 2026, Christmas in Finland 2026 and Helsinki Christmas Market 2026. Crossing to Estonia? New Year’s Eve in Tallinn 2026 is there for comparison.

New Year in Finland 2026: what I would pick
Tampere. An afternoon train from Helsinki on 31 December, the Rajaportti sauna at 16:00 for 8 €, dinner near Laukontori and the Ratina fireworks at 22:00, ideally from a Ratina-side room at the Ilves. On 1 January the Sunday-timetable train back. I would leave Lapland for February or March, when the aurora odds are better, the days longer and cottages cheaper. If it has to be Lapland at New Year, then Rovaniemi town, not the village: free riverbank fireworks and the night train both ways, booked today.
Frequently asked questions
Does Rovaniemi have fireworks on New Year’s Eve?
Yes, at midnight from the Koskipuisto swimming beach on the Kemijoki, free, best seen from the Pohjanhovi shore. The 2026 programme comes in late December.
Are there fireworks at Santa Claus Village at midnight?
The village has announced no official New Year event. Safari companies sell paid programmes that end with fireworks there at midnight; do not count on an official display.
Will I see the northern lights on New Year’s Eve in Lapland?
On about every second clear night between Rovaniemi and Saariselkä, best around 23:30. Cloud is the problem, not solar activity, which is still high in 2026/27.
What is open in Finland on 1 January 2027?
Alko is closed, big supermarkets open around midday, most museums are closed, Santa Claus Village is open. Trains run on a Sunday timetable and ski resorts are open 10:00 to 18:00.
Information checked on 6 October 2026. Where a date or price is marked “2025”, it is last year’s and the organiser has not yet announced the 2026 edition. Finnish cities publish their New Year programmes in the second half of December; I will update this guide as the dates come in.
