Direct flights from Tallinn are easier and harder this autumn, both at once. Easier, because 2026 brought seven new direct routes to Tallinn Airport, Rome and Vienna among them. Harder, because airBaltic is shrinking in Tallinn for the winter, and several routes you may be used to vanish from the schedule at the end of October.
I do not believe in a weekend with a connection. If you have Friday to Sunday, four hours in Riga or Frankfurt airport is a third of your holiday. So here are nine cities you can reach non-stop from Tallinn this autumn, each with one dated reason to go now and one museum you can enter for free. I put this together at my desk from the airport, airline and museum websites. Schedules change, so check the dates before you buy.

Airlines are taken from Tallinn Airport’s destination pages and the new routes from the airport’s own announcement. The cuts were confirmed in early September by Aviation Week: airBaltic’s winter seat capacity in Tallinn drops by a fifth, and Barcelona, Copenhagen, London Gatwick, Gran Canaria and Nice disappear for the winter. Ryanair is also reducing winter capacity in Estonia. I could not confirm frequencies for every route, so they are not in the table.
Rome: a new non-stop route and two festivals
This is the biggest news of the autumn. Wizz Air flies from Tallinn to Rome Fiumicino three times a week, on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, and is the only airline on the route. The airport announced it for 21 September, but according to the aviation trade press it has been flying since late April. Out on Friday and back on Monday is exactly what a long weekend needs.
In October Rome still has 23 degrees in the daytime, which is more than Tallinn manages in some Julys. The Romaeuropa festival of theatre, dance and music runs from 8 September to 15 November, and the Rome Film Fest from 13 to 25 October. State museums are free on the first Sunday of every month, this autumn on 4 October and 1 November. That includes the Colosseum, and it also includes the queue.
Vienna: go in November, not October
Vienna is the other new route, with airBaltic, and unlike much else it stays for the winter, up to twice a week. In October Vienna is grey and 14 degrees. But on 13 November the Christmas market on Rathausplatz opens together with its ice rink, and it runs until 26 December. If you want a Christmas market without the December crowd, the second half of November is the time. The permanent exhibition of the Wien Museum is free. Paris: an art fair and a free Orsay
airBaltic flies direct to Paris. October there means 17 degrees and the best light of the year. From 23 to 25 October Art Basel Paris fills the Grand Palais with half the world’s galleries, which means the smaller galleries put up their best shows that same week. The Musée d’Orsay is free on the first Sunday of the month, but you have to book a slot online or you will not get in.
London: three airlines and Frieze
London has the most choice: Ryanair to Stansted, Wizz Air to Luton and, from the winter, Jet2 to Gatwick. airBaltic’s Gatwick route does not fly in winter. Frieze London and Frieze Masters are in Regent’s Park from 14 to 18 October, and the Frieze sculpture show in the same park stays up until 1 November. London’s big museums are famously free, but I could not check that on the official page this time, so look before you go.
Milan and Barcelona: the warmer end
Ryanair flies to Milan. It is 19 degrees in October, and from 22 October to 8 November the JAZZMI festival fills both the concert halls and the bars. The free first Sunday at Italian state museums applies here too.
In winter only Ryanair flies to Barcelona, because airBaltic is not keeping its route. It is 22 degrees in October and still 18 in November. 2026 is the centenary of Gaudí’s death: the tallest tower of the Sagrada Família was finished in February and blessed in June. If you have been putting Barcelona off, this is the year. The Picasso Museum is free on the first Sunday of the month and on Thursday evenings, check the exact time and booking on the museum’s site.
Berlin, Amsterdam and Copenhagen: light against the dark
These three cities are as grey as Tallinn in October, and all three have decided to do something about it. Berlin has the Festival of Lights from 9 to 18 October, when the city’s best-known buildings are wrapped in light every evening from seven to eleven. Berlin no longer has a free museum Sunday, it ended in December 2024, so do not trust old blogs. Hamburger Bahnhof is free on the first Thursday of the month from four to eight.
Amsterdam has its Museum Night on 7 November, with museums open until two in the morning, and the light festival starts on 26 November and runs until mid January. SAS flies to Copenhagen in winter. Its Culture Night, Kulturnatten, is on 9 October from six until midnight, and Halloween at Tivoli runs from 2 October to 1 November. The Glyptotek is free on the last Wednesday of every month.
How to choose
If you want warmth, Rome or Barcelona, and go in October. If you want an event to build the weekend around, Berlin 9 to 18 October, Paris 23 to 25 October or Amsterdam on 7 November. If you want Christmas before everyone else, Vienna after 13 November. And if you just want to get away cheaply, watch the Ryanair and Wizz Air cities, because their fares swing the most.
The hotel makes a bigger dent in a city-break budget than the flight. Book your bed the same day you book the ticket, especially on festival weekends.
