Museums Open on Monday in Tallinn and Tartu (2026)

Monday is the day museum plans fall apart. You land in Tallinn on a Sunday night, wake up ready for Kumu, and find the doors shut. Most Estonian museums close on Mondays, some close Tuesdays too, and the websites do not make it obvious. So this is the list I keep for myself of museums open on Monday in Tallinn and Tartu, what is closed, and what I would do with the day. Hours and prices are what the museums publish as of late September 2026. Check the museum page before you go, because winter hours shift in October.

Museums open on Monday in Tallinn

These are the ones you can count on year-round.

Kiek in de Kök and the Bastion Tunnels. Open Mon–Sun 11–18. The tunnels under the Old Town walls are the best rainy-day thing in Tallinn and nobody expects them to be open on a Monday. Tickets are sold at the tower; the combined ticket is the one to get.
Energy Discovery Centre. Open every day 10–19. Tesla coil lightning shows daily, and it is the easy answer for families with kids under ten when everything else is shut.
Tallinn TV Tower. Sun–Thu 10–19, Fri–Sat 10–21. Not a museum in the strict sense, but there is an exhibition floor, a glass-floor viewing deck and the best view of the city on a clear day. After 19:00 only the viewing floor is open.
Estonian Open Air Museum (Rocca al Mare). Open daily. In the summer season (late April to late September) the farm buildings are open 10–18 and the park until 20:00; adult ticket 18 €, family 38 €. In winter the buildings close and you get the park at a lower price. On a Monday in July this is where I would go.
Tallinn Zoo. Open every day. Monday hours are shorter than the rest of the week (from 11:00), so do not arrive at opening time expecting the gates to be open.
Fotografiska Tallinn. Open daily, usually from 09:00 until late. Photography exhibitions, a good restaurant upstairs, and it sits in Telliskivi next to the cafés and shops that are also open on Mondays.

Open on Mondays only in summer

Seaplane Harbour (Lennusadam) and Fat Margaret. May to September: Mon–Sun 10–19. October to April: Tue–Sun 10–18, closed Mondays. This catches a lot of people. My full guide is here: Seaplane Harbour Tallinn.
Vabamu Museum of Occupations and Freedom. May to October daily 10–18. In winter Wed–Sun 11–18, so closed both Monday and Tuesday. Adult ticket 15 €, family 30 €.
Art Museum of Estonia branches. Kumu, Kadriorg Art Museum, Niguliste and Mikkel are closed on Mondays as a rule, but the museum sometimes opens a single exhibition on summer Mondays. In 2026 that was one show at Kumu until the end of September. Check the visit page for the branch you want; do not assume.

Closed on Mondays in Tallinn

Save yourself the walk. Kumu and the other Art Museum of Estonia branches, the Estonian History Museum (Great Guild Hall, Maarjamäe Palace and the Film Museum, all Tue–Sun 10–18), PROTO Invention Factory (Tue–Sun 11–18, the café opens on Mondays but the factory does not), the Estonian Health Museum, the Museum of Estonian Architecture, the Estonian Museum of Natural History and the Tallinn City Museum branches are all closed on Mondays. The KGB Museum at Hotel Viru runs guided tours only and the calendar changes by season, so book online before you plan around it.

Museums open on Monday in Tartu

Tartu is harder. The big three, the Estonian National Museum, the Tartu Toy Museum and the University of Tartu museums, all close on Mondays. What is left is still a good day.

AHHAA Science Centre. Open every day: Mon–Thu and Sun 10–19, Fri–Sat 10–20. This is the Monday plan for anyone with children. Budget three hours and a planetarium show.
Upside Down House (Tagurpidi Maja). Mon–Sun 10–18. Twenty minutes of silly photos next to AHHAA. Not a museum, but it is open, and on a Monday that counts.
Estonian Sports and Olympic Museum. July and August only: Mon–Sun 10–18. The rest of the year it is Wed–Sun.

Closed on Mondays in Tartu

The Estonian National Museum is Tue–Sun 10–18. The Tartu Toy Museum is Wed–Sun 11–18, closed Monday and Tuesday. The same goes for the Tartu City Museum and the KGB Cells (Wed–Sun 11–18), the Tartu Art Museum, and TYPA (Wed–Sun from 12:00). The University of Tartu Museum, the Art Museum in the main building and the Old Observatory are Tue–Sun 10–18. The Ice Age Centre outside town is Tue–Sun. The Aviation Museum at Lange closes for the whole winter, from late October to late April.

What I would do with a Monday

Tallinn, any season. Bastion Tunnels at 11:00 when they open, then walk down through the Old Town to Telliskivi for lunch and Fotografiska. If the weather holds, the TV Tower in the late afternoon; if it does not, the Energy Discovery Centre with kids or the Balti Jaam market without them. In summer, swap the afternoon for the Seaplane Harbour, which is open until 19:00 and empties out after 16:00.

Tartu. AHHAA in the morning, the Upside Down House on the way out, and the afternoon in the Old Town, which does not close on Mondays. Save ERM and the Toy Museum for Tuesday and Wednesday. If you only have the one day in Tartu and it is a Monday, I would honestly consider going on a Tuesday instead. My Tartu museums day-trip route assumes a Tuesday to Sunday.

Tickets and the museum card

Most of the Monday-open places in Tallinn are on the Estonian museum card (75 € for a year), including Kiek in de Kök, the Open Air Museum and the Seaplane Harbour, so if you are here for more than a couple of days it pays off fast. Fotografiska, the TV Tower, the Energy Discovery Centre, AHHAA and the Zoo sell their own tickets. Walking tours run on Mondays when museums do not. If the day is short, a two-hour Old Town walk in the morning leaves the afternoon for the tunnels.

Tallinn on a Monday: Bastion Tunnels, Energy Discovery Centre, TV Tower, Open Air Museum, Zoo, Fotografiska, and from May to September also the Seaplane Harbour and Vabamu. Tartu on a Monday: AHHAA and the Upside Down House, plus the Sports Museum in July and August. Everything else waits until Tuesday, and Kumu, Vabamu in winter and the Tartu Toy Museum wait until Wednesday.
